York Heritage Watch

York Heritage Watch is an informal partnership between the police and the heritage community in York. The objectives of the group are to improve the flow of intelligence between stakeholders and to improve surveillance and security surrounding the wide variety of heritage sites across the City of York.

It is recognised that incidents and crimes against the heritage community are going un-reported and this can have serious implications for people and heritage assets, and the establishment of such a watch scheme will provide a platform for the sharing of information and best practice.

A steering group was formed in 2016, including representatives from the Police, York Minster, York Museums Trust, The National Trust, The Church Conservation Trust, Yorkshire Museums Development Officers, Historic England, The Portable Antiquities Scheme. York Diocese, York Civic Trust and Safer York have all agreed to engage with the group.

To publicise the group and to encourage membership, an event to introduce York Heritage Watch is being held in York on 28th March 2017 , and those interested in joining the scheme are cordially invited to attend the event. More details will follow.

We are applying for funding from the Aviva Community Fund to establish the scheme as a not-for-profit social enterprise and rolling the scheme out across rural North Yorkshire. The funding is dependent upon a public vote and you can help us with our bid by voting for us on this link.

Your vote will help us.

Our heritage is under attack on a daily basis and we want to help to put a stop to heritage crime.
